More delays, but I've now got a new proposed thesis proposal defense date: April 9th.

All things considered, I'm not sure I'll really believe it until I'm served with the official paperwork, but it sounds like the schedules have already been considered and all signs point to this date actually working out.

I just wish I felt less like Charlie Brown trying to kick that darned football.

I suspect it is often the way. I look to PhD comics for solace. ;)

You look to PhDcomics for *solace*? I find them extremely depressing, if in a funny way.

That's what the wink was meant to convey: that they actually really aren't very good for solace, except perhaps in the "everyone has crappy days" sort of way.

Oh, missed that on my 9in netbook screen.

;)

In my case (for proposal defence), it's not just the date, it's committee composition, esp. since my advisor is in a different dept from my program. It makes things a bit ambiguous.

I might actually proposal-defend before you though ;) ;) :)

recaptcha: "cyanide making"

Prophetic? I'm impressed at how often recaptcha turns out to be disturbing in context.

Well THIS one says "where puffin", but I think it means to tell me "were-puffin". As in "cyanide-making were-puffin".

I dare you to write teen romance fiction about were-puffins. They could be the new vampires!

O RLY. Something like

****
Damien [ed.--is this name not darkly romantic?] leaned slowly toward her, straining to pull in his prominent chest. The sun was starting to rise, and his shirtless powerful body began to jiggle in its light. Lycra turned up her lips and closed her eyes. His mouth, the hue of an autumn sunset, descended to millimeters away from her lips. She detected a faint, delicious aroma of almond. But then he whispered 'No!' and pulled back sharply.

Lycra opened her eyes, disappointed. He pulled a flask from his form-fitting jeans. 'Sodium hypochlorite' (http://www.finishing.com/68/52.shtml), it said on the side. He took a swig and swished it around in his mouth and spat, while Lycra fantasized about the deadly cyanide kiss from which he had saved her. Then he approached her again...

*insert sucrose smoochy scene, I really can't write this*

..."It is almost nightfall in Siberia, where my tribe, the Horny Puffins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horned_Puffin), now return to their puffin forms," Damien said, gazing deep into her eyes. And as she watched, his chest puffed out further and started to whiten. "I'm sorry, love, I cannot resist the call of a beak full of fish!" He pulled away, and he started to shink. She bent down down and attempted to kiss his lips again, but they began to elongate. "My love," he said, "RememBUHSQUAWK". Damien toddled towards her and hopped up onto her shoulder, and she pulled her eyepatch back over her eye, because she was almost late for Junior Pirate Academy.
****

maybe?

This *whole* thread is disturbing? I mean, it only started getting disturbing at the first instance of "cyanide making". Before that it was just vaguely despondent.

Ah! A non-prophetic recaptcha: "mayor government". We need to govern our mayors better! Well, hmm, actually we do...

Yes, we really do need to govern our mayor better.

Seriously, I wonder if there's any one worth voting for in the new batch of candidates. Did you hear that Gauthier stomped off in a huff because he couldn't deal with the fact that the city decided to let a cheese shop keep their fake cow on the roof?

Hah, I just Googled that. Cow: kryptonite for councillor.

As for the new candidates, my informants tell me it's too early to tell. Anyone But Larry, please. I would generally follow the advice of Vicky (http://offhand.ca/), but that's just me.

PhD despair to cyanide-making were-puffins to Ottawa municipal politics. Google's LSI engine must be smoking about now.

And the recaptcha's have gotten dark again: "to bitumen". So true.

This thread is only the second link from Google on a search for "cyanide puffin". There's something wrong with this. It should be first.

I'm rather impressed at how many cyanide puffin links there are, actually. However, cyanidepuffin.com seems to still be available. Want to start a blog about dubious recaptchas, municipal politics, and despair? ;)
