Axe in my head is definitely worth trying, if you get a chance to demo it. I haven't played anything really similar in gameplay or strategy before, and although it took quite a while to go through the rules, the gameplay itself was pretty quick and the game itself can't last more than 6-7 rounds (although each one includes running, treaty making, axe throwing, etc.) The hilarity value of the setting seems unlikely to wear off, and it's such a change from lovecraftian horrors and zombies that it was a real treat. I suspect the game is really made or broken on the treaties, so if you play make sure to try to bring some in to get the full experience.
And yes, it was Apocalypse World. I'd definitely play it again, but only with a lot more time -- because the character relationships drive things you have to have more of an idea in your head before you sit down and create characters, I think. The GM did a great job of helping set up our relationships with npcs and each other by "reminding" us of events that happened and letting us build on them or veto them as suited us, but I'm not sure I was mentally ready for a roleplaying experience since I had no idea what we were getting into when we got invited to play.
