I hadn't thought of scanning them! I'll have to try that, although I suspect my photographer-self will not be terribly thrilled with the results (or more likely, the excuse to use the camera). Still, worth trying!
And no, there's no cabling needle. It's k2tog (knit to together) on one side, then sl1 k1 psso on the other (slip one stitch, knit one, then pass the slipped stitch backwards over the knit one).
