terrikoI've already forgotten which books I read before 2011 started, so some of the books I'm posting in the next few posts might technically have been last year's novels, but whatever. You get reviews anyhow. I've written a bunch of these at once but I'll be posting these one per day so you don't wind up with a pile of them all at once just because I forgot to do them as I finished books. I wish dreamwidth had the ability to schedule posts in advance...
Penny Arcade Volume 4: Birds Are Weird by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik
Twitter-sized review: I'm not really enough of a Penny Arcade fan to love this book, but hello, public library copy!
Longer notes: You know, despite the fact that I'm a huge PAX devotee, a gamer, and even defended dickwolves, I'm actually not much of a Penny Arcade fan. However, I saw the book at the library and I've found I enjoy other comics more when they're collected into novel form so I thought I'd give it a try... unfortunately, the collection didn't really add to my enjoyment (except for the intro material and the extended discussion of printing the book on meat, which was awesome). Context for each comic was provided in the form of notes on the page, much as context is usually provided in the news posts (only less wordy) so I could still get the jokes, but sometimes it left me to wonder why I was bothering reading a collection of disjointed comics about really old gaming news. An interesting trip down memory lane, definitely with some fun moments, but I think you really have to be a fan to get the most out of this one.
